Homemade crock dill pickles. I just love them. As a kid, my dad would make a gigantic batch, and even though the process was a bit disgusting (what is that white, bubbly film that grows on top anyway?) the results were fantastic. I was hooked, and have been ever since.
Finding a big enough batch of pickling cucumbers can be a challenge. I made a few phone calls to farm stands and came up with nothing, so I decided to take the kids to the Farmers Market on 32nd street. They wouldn't let me down, right?
The Farmers Market on 32nd has been going strong since 1980. I hadn't been for a few years, so I was happy to see it is thriving, with many of vendors I recognized from previous years, and a few new ones to enjoy.
We made a beeline for the far corner of the market, scoping the booths as we went, then purchased our favorites on the way back. I couldn't resist the fresh lima beans and butter beans. My kids are weird and love lima beans. I also couldn't resist the fresh sourdough bread, apples, apple cider, grapes, cut flowers, shitake and oyster mushrooms, and of course a snack from the nut stand for the kids. By the time I was buying cucumbers, I was pretty loaded down. Think pack mule. But ohhh was it worth it.
