Wings of Fancy at Brookside Gardens

WHEN: May 2 - September 20, 2009

Butterfly

You can actually hear the gasps as people walk through the conservatory doors at Brookside Gardens. Hundreds of butterflies cover every surface and float by the crowd. My kids were amazed and couldn't stop pulling me in different directions to see their favorites. But honestly, I found myself oooing and ahhhing too.

The butterflies and moths on display here are all farm raised, and brought in as chrysalises and cocoons. They are tended in a climate controlled case until they hatch, and then they live out their days sampling the flowers and fruit in the conservatory. Not a bad life. There is a "no touching" rule here, because it can harm the butterflies, but apparently no one told the butterflies. They routinely land on people and will hang out for a while on a lucky shoulder or head. My younger daughter was rather upset that none of them would land on her, but when I picked her up and held her higher, a few kind butterflies obliged.

There is a touch and feel station set up where a volunteer will answer questions and kids can touch a few dead specimens. Thank goodness for patient volunteers because, as usual, my son found about a million things to ask.

Meanwhile, my older two (my daughter brought a friend) were busy naming every last butterfly they saw. You can probably guess, we were there for a long time.

After we are checked for stray butterflies, we headed out the door for a lovely stroll through the gardens. A perfect end to the day.

[Note: Bring some extra water; the greenhouses are warm and humid. This exhibit runs every year during the warm season. It may occasionally close during extreme heat advisories. Please call the butterfly hotline for up-to-date details.

I'm a little embarrassed to admit that if it weren't for a certain 4th grader in my home, I might have completely missed the news that Pluto has been demoted to dwarf planet. I'm more Apollo vintage. Fortunately, I'm still mostly in touch with the greater world and for those of you with your own little astronauts, you might want to check out Maryland's Place in Space – a one day science extravaganza that includes NASA astronauts, robotic competitions, MPT's Sid the Science Kid, and even Wall-E . This is a free event, and will include lots of hands-on activities.

Sowebo Arts Festival

WHEN: Sunday, May 24, 2009
WHERE: In the Bullseye of Sowebo, Surrounding Hollins Market [Map it]

Every Memorial Day weekend, artists take to the street and musicians play for the crowd, Bohemian style. Things you might want to explore with your kids (or without) include watching a performance by Black Cherry Theater's puppeteers or joining "a communal painting tsunami" to create some street art. As always, there will be open art galleries to explore and music to hear, just watch out for the Conga line...

Space Day at Maryland Science Center

WHEN:  Saturday, May 9, 2009 Noon-4 pm

This weekend is Space Day at the Maryland Science Center. Your little astronauts can make their own wearable space helmets, decorate space cookies, build a working spectroscope, create solar art and launch rockets. Launch rockets? Now I'm scared.

Former NASA astronaut Ken Reightler will be on hand to sign autographs and answer questions (like "hey, are those kids over there really supposed to be launching rockets?").

All Space Day activities are free with paid admission.

Kinetic Sculpture Race

WHEN: Saturday, May 2, 2009
WHERE: All over, but starting at the American Visionary Art Museum

If you have ever had the pleasure of seeing the Kinetic Sculpture Race, you already know it's not to be missed. It's hard to know which team to root for. David Hess will be racing PLATYPUS (Personal Long-range All Terrain Yacht, Proven Un Safe). "Twitter Jay and the Recyclists" is an entry by Johns Hopkins students who promise to use "about a million" blue grocery bags to recreate a Hopkins Blue Jay. Or maybe "Hot Beef Injection." Yeah, I know the name is a bit much, but you've gotta love that it features a working grill and they will cook their way to the finish line. Other entries include local schools, father/daughter teams, and one all the way from Missouri.

Here's the information from AVAM so you can plan your course:

A race of wacky, imaginative, totally human-powered works of art designed to travel on land, through mud, and over deep Harbor waters constructed out of used bicycles, gears, and parts, created by a lunatic genius who tinkers around in the garage or backyard (Do you know this person?) The machines can be simple, small crafts, piloted by only one brave soul, or they can be over 50 feet long, extremely well-engineered, sophisticated vehicles powered by a team of pilots. Pilots (Kinetinauts) compete for the most coveted Mediocre Award (finishes right in the middle) and the highly prized Next-to-the-Last Award (finishes, well, next to last) and serious prizes including Art and Engineering. If you want to see the vehicles WHOLE, go to the museum for the 10am start (get there early - by 9 a.m. - to take part in Opening Ceremony, including the Blessing of De Feet!); if you want to see the crafts AT SEA, go to the water entry at the Korean War Memorial Park in Canton (approx 11:15 am); feel the need for NO SPEED, try the not-so-quick-sand pit in Patterson Park (approx. 1pm); if DIRTY is your thing, catch the vehicles at the mud-pit also in Patterson Park (approx 1:30 pm); if you want to see the vehicles BROKEN, head to the finish at AVAM at approximately 3:30 pm. Earth Day at Maryland Science Center

WHEN:  Saturday, April 25, 2009 Noon-4 pm

This weekend you can celebrate Earth Day at the Maryland Science Center, all while learning how to reduce your environmental impact. Compete in recycling sorting races, build model green roofs, check out a solar-powered water fountain, make “litterbugs” from recycled materials and create spider puppets.

Personally, I really want to learn about green roofs, but I'm guessing the rest of my family would head straight for the recycled bugs.
